Effective
Techne AI Pty Ltd (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates Lurna, a mastery-based learning service for Australian primary school families. We are bound by the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
Lurna is used by children, and their information is handled with more care than the law strictly requires. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the control you have over it.
1. What this policy covers
This policy applies to the Lurna website, the Lurna learning application, and any communication you have with us about them. It covers personal information about parents and guardians, about the children in their care, and about teachers or schools who contact us.
It does not cover websites we link to. Those services have their own policies, and we encourage you to read them.
2. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of personal information.
- Information you give us directly: the parent or guardian name and email address submitted through our early-access form, and anything you include when you email us.
- Account information: the email address, password credential, and name held by our authentication provider when you create an account.
- Child profile information: a child’s first name or nickname and year level, entered by the responsible adult. We do not ask for a child’s surname, date of birth, address, or photograph.
- Learning information: the questions a child is shown, the answers given, time taken, attempts, mastery outcomes, and session history. This is the information that makes the product work.
- Technical information: IP address, browser and device type, pages visited, and error logs, collected automatically when you use the service.
- Correspondence: support enquiries, feedback, and our replies.
3. Children’s information
Accounts on Lurna are created and controlled by a parent, guardian, or authorised educator, not by children themselves. The responsible adult provides consent for the child’s use of the service and can see the information held about their child at any time.
We practise data minimisation for children: we collect what is needed to teach, measure mastery, and report progress to the responsible adult, and nothing more. We do not build advertising profiles of children, we do not sell children’s information, and we do not use children’s information to serve third-party advertising.
If you believe a child has provided us with information without the consent of their parent or guardian, contact us and we will delete it.
4. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Provide the learning service, including selecting the next question and tracking mastery.
- Create, secure, and support accounts.
- Show parents and guardians accurate progress and diagnostic reporting.
- Respond to enquiries and provide support.
- Improve the product, including analysing aggregated and de-identified learning outcomes to make teaching decisions better.
- Maintain security, prevent misuse, and diagnose faults.
- Meet our legal obligations.
5. Artificial intelligence features
Some Lurna features use artificial intelligence to support learning, such as generating explanations or reading text aloud. Where a feature sends content to a third-party AI provider, it sends only the material needed for that task.
We do not permit our AI providers to use information sent from Lurna to train their general-purpose models. AI features are identified as software to children and operate inside parent-visible safeguards.
6. Who we share information with
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run Lurna, and only to the extent they need it to perform their function. These include our authentication provider, our application and database hosting provider, our email delivery provider, and the AI providers described above.
We may also disclose personal information where we are required or authorised to do so by Australian law, where it is necessary to protect the safety of a person, or to a purchaser as part of a sale or restructure of our business, in which case this policy continues to apply to the information transferred.
7. Overseas disclosure
Some of our service providers store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Before disclosing personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient handles it consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles, including through contractual commitments.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and equivalent browser storage that are strictly necessary to operate the service, principally to keep you signed in and to keep your session secure. These cannot be switched off without breaking sign-in.
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking pixels. If we later introduce optional analytics, we will update this policy and ask for consent before setting non-essential cookies.
9. Payments
Lurna is free during early access and we do not currently collect payment information. If we introduce paid plans, payments will be processed by a specialist third-party payment provider. Card numbers would be handled by that provider under its own security standards and would not be stored on our systems.
10. Communications
If you join our early-access list, we will email you about your place and about the launch of the service. Every such email includes a way to unsubscribe, and unsubscribing does not affect service or security messages about an account you hold, which we must still be able to send.
11. How we protect information
We protect personal information with encryption in transit, access controls that limit staff access to what a role requires, hashed credentials handled by our authentication provider, audit logging of administrative actions, and regular review of our dependencies for known vulnerabilities.
No online service can promise perfect security. If a data breach occurs that is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
12. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only while it serves the purpose it was collected for. Learning history is retained while an account is active so that progress remains meaningful over time. Early-access enquiries are retained until launch communications are complete, or until you ask us to remove them.
When you close an account, we delete or de-identify the personal information associated with it within 90 days, except where we are legally required to keep records for longer. Aggregated, de-identified information that cannot be linked back to a person may be retained.
13. Accessing and correcting your information
You may ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you or about a child in your care, and you may ask us to correct anything inaccurate or delete information you no longer want us to hold. Email us and we will respond within 30 days.
We will need to verify your identity before acting on a request. If we refuse a request, we will explain why in writing and tell you how to complain.
14. Complaints
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, please contact us first so we can put it right. We will acknowledge your complaint within 5 business days and aim to resolve it within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service develops. The effective date at the top of this page always reflects the current version. If a change materially affects how we handle personal information, we will tell account holders directly before it takes effect.
